Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has recovered a cache of firearms and ammunition in an operation in Hnila of Teknaf, Cox's Bazar on Tuesday.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Jasim Uddin, commanding officer of the Ukhiya-64 BGB Battalion, said no one could be arrested as the traffickers fled toward Myanmar by boat after opening fire.

The seized weapons include two G3 rifles, one MA-1, one LM, eight magazines, and 500 rounds of ammunition.

Acting on intelligence about firearms trafficking, a BGB team launched an operation at Khurer Dwip yesterday noon.

"Sensing our presence, the miscreants fired one round and fled toward Myanmar. Later, we searched the area and recovered the arms and ammunition," Lt Col Jasim Uddin said.

He added that the BGB remains prepared to protect national security and prevent smuggling, drugs, and illegal weapons from crossing the border. The recovered arms were likely brought in by smugglers or militant groups and could have been stored for criminal activities, trafficking, or sabotage, he said.

BGB has intensified intelligence operations to trace the sources and identify those involved. The arms and ammunition will be handed over to Teknaf Model Police Station.
