Another Olive Ridley sea turtle laid 132 eggs in the sandy beach of Cox's Bazar. At 12:30 on Thursday night, the turtle returned to the sea after laying eggs on Sonar Para beach of Ukhia upazila. Scientists of Bangladesh Sea Research Institute (Bori) have collected the eggs and preserved those in the hatchery of the beach in a scientific way. Touhida Rasheed said that earlier another turtle laid 125 eggs on the same beach. These eggs have also been stored for hatching. Bangladesh Marine Research Institute senior scientific officer Tariqul Islam said, the eggs were preserved by digging two feet of soil in the natural environment of the beach. The eggs will hatch in the next 50 to 55 days. The babies will then be released into the sea.
He said, the breeding season of sea turtles is from November to April. Meanwhile, the mother turtle comes to the beach to lay eggs. At this time, many turtles die on the beach.
Meanwhile, from February 2 to 8, nine more mother turtles laid 1,777 eggs at Ukhia and Teknaf beaches. The eggs were reportedly collected by the non-governmental organization Community Development Center (CODEC) for hatchery purposes. The USAID-funded Nature and Life Project has taken initiatives to conserve the sea turtles.
