An annual review meeting on the progress and future plans of village court activities was held in Gopalganj on Thursday at the Gopalganj Municipal Auditorium. The event was organised by the District Administration in collaboration with the Activating Village Courts in Bangladesh – Phase III Project, under the Local Government Division, Ministry of LGRD, with technical and financial support from UNDP and the European Union.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate (Joint Secretary) Muhammad Kamruzzaman as Chief Guest. Deputy Director of Local Government (Deputy Secretary) and Acting Municipal Administrator Bishwajit Kumar Pal presided over the session.

The DC emphasised that elected representatives must serve the public by resolving local disputes through the village courts, which can handle cases involving disputes up to Tk 300,000. He noted variation in performance among unions and urged all to improve service delivery.

Presentations showed that from July 2024 to June 2025, 771 cases were filed, 697 resolved, and over Tk 90 lakh recovered. The top-performing union councils—Fukra, Sajail, and Bandhabari—were awarded for their efforts.

Officials from police, UNDP, Wave Foundation, and local leaders discussed increasing public trust, awareness, and institutional support for village courts. Around 90 participants, including UNO officers and union chairmen, were present.
