The 15th Central Annual Drama Festival 2021 has started on Monday at the initiative of the Department of Theater and Performance Studies in Dhaka University. Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the colorful festival at Natmal Auditorium on Monday evening. State Minister for Culture KM Khalid was present on the occasion as the Chief Guest.
Chairman of the department Professor Ashikur Rahman Leon presided over the programme where Treasurer of the University Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed was present as the special guest. At the inaugural function, this year's renowned actor, director and cultural personality Ramendu Majumder was given the Natyajan Samman.
VC Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman said that the festival is a strong accompaniment to the educational activities of the students of the Department of Theater and Performance Studies. He said that this annual drama festival will provide strength, courage, encouragement and inspiration to the students on the way forward. The Vice-Chancellor hoped that the students will develop their skills and develop their professionalism and knowledge through the practical practice of educational activities.
State Minister KM Khalid said Dhaka University, the birthplace of all movements and democracy including language movement and independence movement, is one of the bearers of our culture. Highlighting the contribution of Dhaka University in the formation of this state, he said, "Dhaka University has received the Independence Medal as the only university in the country for its important role in achieving independence. Apart from educational activities, the students of Dhaka University have a glorious walk in all the courtyards including art, culture and drama.”
The festival kicked off with the staging of Samuel Beckett's play "Waiting for Godot" under the direction of Departmental Professor Md Israfil. The drama festival will continue till March 26.
