Andhakalyan samity has conducted a free eye treatment and cataract surgery selection camp in Ishakpur, Noakhali Sadar Upazila. The day-long camp, held on Saturday at Major Mannan High School, provided eye check-ups to over 300 patients, of whom 80 were selected for free cataract surgery.
According to the organisation, these 80 underprivileged patients will be transported by bus to the Mazharul Haque BNSB Eye Hospital in Chandpur district. There, their surgeries will be performed, including lens implantation. After the procedures, they will be safely returned to their respective homes.
Many patients expressed gratitude for the opportunity, noting that the cost of cataract surgery is often beyond their means. Abdul Wahab, one such patient, shared that he had been suffering from poor eyesight for five years but could not afford the operation. Upon hearing about the camp through word of mouth, he attended the screening and was selected for surgery. He expressed his heartfelt thanks to Andhakalyan samity for this life-changing support.
In addition to the 80 selected for surgery, other patients received preliminary treatment and free medication. Those in need of glasses were advised accordingly.
Dr Uttam Majumder, General Secretary of the Association, stated that the organisation has been offering free eye care since 2009, holding at least five camps annually. To date, over 2,000 patients from across the district have received cataract surgeries and lens implants. He urged affluent members of society to come forward and support the initiative, which could potentially double the number of camps each year.
