Harassment is another name of service at Mirjaganj Upazil Election Office. Voter area are changing without consent of the voter! Besides for a small correction people have to visit upazila election office several time. All these allegations were made against Mirzaganj Upazila Election Officer by several victims.
It was learned that the recipients of multiple services are being harassed by going to the office for various purposes including national identity card correction, voter transfer, and becoming a new voter. There are also allegations against Upazila Election Officer Mohammad Shahadat Hossain for changing the constituency without informing the voters. As a result, those voters are being subjected to extreme suffering and harassment.
Beauty Begum is a resident of Ranipur village in ward 8 of Deuli Subidkhali union of the upazila. She wanted to contest from that ward in the last UP election. But without informing her, the election official shifted her to Ward No 4 by colluding with Hosneyara Begum, wife of rival candidate Badal Chowkidar. As a result, Beauty Begum could not participate in the third round of UP elections on November 28 as a reserved female member.
Victim Beauty Begum said, “I participated in the 2016 UP election as a reserved member in wards 7, 8 and 9 of Deuli Subidkhali Union. I bought the nomination form on November 28 to be a candidate in the third phase of UP elections. When they went to fill the nomination form and submit it to the election office, they said, you are a voter of ward no 4, you will not be able to participate in the election from Wards 7, 8 and 9.”
“While asking how my constituency has changed without informing me, the election official does not give a good answer and forbids me to tell anyone. As a result, I could not be a candidate in that election,” she added.
Another victim said Md. Riaz Kazi said, “I went to the election official more than once to correct my national identity card but I did not get any remedy. Whenever I go, he keep saying come later.” To know more when this correspondent phoned the Upazila Election Officer Mohammad Shahadat Hossain, he replied, “Come to my office we will discuss about this.”
District Election Officer Khan Abi Shahanur Khan said, “I have not received any complaint in this
regard so far.”
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Most. Tania Ferdous said, "I hope action will be taken if you lodge a written complaint with the concerned authorities."
