The Election Commission (EC) has taken all-out measures to hold the upcoming national election in a free, fair and peaceful manner. As part of the measures, the commission has ordered the members of different law enforcement agencies and the administration to make sure that no elements resort to any kind of violence during the election.

A quarter is hatching conspiracy to foil the 12th parliamentary elections slated for January 7 by carrying out destructive activities. BNP and Jamaat cliques are now desperate to foil the polls. In the continuity of the past, they want to make the election and the electoral process questionable by standing against democratic process.

At the same time, they are also trying to disrupt political stability in the country. As part of their blue print, these organised vested interest groups are carrying out sabotage in different metropolitan cities, including the capital Dhaka, district towns, and other important places of the country. The recent act of sabotage and arson attacks on railway during BNP-Jamaat’s blockade programme is a direct attack on the state and its people. Their main target is to foil the upcoming national polls and hinder the nation’s progress as well.

The BNP-Jamaat are continuing horrible atrocities, creating panic among the people. They are not only causing physical harm to citizens but also damaging government property. So, the government and people of the country have to stand firmly against these forces.

In view of the situation, the commission will deploy army for 13 days from December 29 to January 10 to ensure peaceful holding of the election. Army will be deployed in all 300 constituencies of the country to extend cooperation to civil administration under “In Aid to the Civil Power” to maintain law and order before, during and after the voting.

Evil forces want to make the

election and the electoral

 process questionable by standing against

 democratic process

With hardly only 14 days left for the general election, the country wears festive a look as all the constituencies have got adorned with posters, symbols, banners and festoons. Supporters of their candidates are chanting slogans around all the constituencies, seeking votes for their respective candidates. Posters and banners have covered almost all the roads and even highways across the country.

A festive mood centering the election now prevails with the supporters shouting slogans in favour of their candidates. After failing to gain people’s support, BNP and their like-minded parties have intensified their efforts to enforce a blockade with an aim to foil the election. They have chosen the path of vandalism and arson attacks to achieve their heinous goal. They are committing crimes to put pressure on the government to concede to their controversial demands.

Those who attacked Chief Justice’s residence, Rajarbag Police Line Hospital, policemen and journalists on October 28, are now setting fire on buses and trains at sporadic places. They (saboteurs) are attacking the railway in two ways -- either damaging tracks or setting fire to carriages in the guise of passengers.

It is very unfortunate that subversive activities are being carried out to create panic among the people ahead of the polls this time. However, we think police and law enforcement agencies have the capacity to create an atmosphere congenial to peaceful election, overcoming all the hurdles and apprehensions.

All believe that the upcoming 12th parliamentary elections will be competitive, free and fair and there is no doubt about it. Therefore, the Election Commission must put in  best efforts to make the election  peaceful by earning the confidence of the voters.
