Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury said, not even an inch of the main waterways of the city will be left at the hand of land grabbers.  Illegal occupants and installations will be evicted.  No matter how influential it is, no one will be given a discount on sesame seeds.  The location of the boundaries of the canals as determined by the design of the CS and RS surveys must be ascertained.

He added that many canals flowing through the city have become extinct due to the aggression of land robbers.  More than 8-10 feet on either side of those that are still flowing have been unoccupied, illegal installations have developed.  Its adverse effects are civic relief.  In the interest of this city, at any cost, illegal settlements on both sides of the canal will be evicted and occupiers will be freed to ensure civic relief.

He made the remarks while inspecting the CCC canal cleaning and garbage removal activities in the area adjacent to South BakaliaIshaq Pool on Thursday.

He told the locals that the water of Bakalia area falls into Karnafuli river through Mirzakhal-Birjakhal-middle canal.  Due to the unawareness of the locals, these three canals have become garbage dumps.  In other words, some people in the area are responsible for depriving these canals of navigability.  Even after cleaning the canals repeatedly, the canals go back to their previous condition in a few days.  CCC cannot take the responsibility alone.  The main responsibility lies with the locals.  If they fail, I will be forced to be strict.

CCC mayor said the CDA is implementing mega projects under the supervision of the army to alleviate water logging in the city.  Its successful implementation will bring blessings to us.  There is temporary suffering for any big receipt.  This is also happening in this case and it has to be accepted.  However, I hope that since the project implementation work is temporarily closed in the monsoon, all the parts of the canal where dams or blocks have been set up in the interest of project implementation will be removed for the time being.  CDA authorities also agree on this.  So if the removal of obstacles is completed quickly, the suffering of the citizens will be alleviated.

Welcoming the ongoing elevated expressway project, the mayor said that if it is implemented, traffic congestion will be reduced.  The airport can be reached from the city center in just half an hour.  But I would hope that this end of the city would start from the other side of the TigerpassOverBridge.  As a result, the eye-catching natural beauty of Tigerpass and Overbridge will be preserved. He added that criminal incidents are taking place on flyovers these days.  Ongoing vehicles are being hijacked and accidents are taking place.  He urged the law enforcement agencies to be vigilant in this regard.

Councilors Md. Shahidul Alam, Md. Nurul Alam, Councilor Shaheen Akhter Rozi, Chief Engineer Rafiqul Islam Manik, Mayor's Secretary Muhammad Abul Hashem, Deputy Chief Cleaning Officer Morshedul Alam Chowdhury were present at the occasion.
