Ruling Awami League is going to hold its central executive meeting today (Thursday) on a limited scale after a gap for about one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

To be chaired by Awami League president Sheikh Hasina, also the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, the meeting will be held at the Prime Minister’s official residence Ganobhaban.

Awami League’s official sources said that objectives of the meeting include some major issues like speeding up party’s organisational activities, holding councils of rest 43 organisational districts of the party and participation in the elections to various local bodies.

Besides, the meeting may discuss about the party’s future planning and its implementation as well. The COVID-19 situation and existing political situation in the country are also expected to be discussed at the meeting.

The last meeting of the party’s central executive committee was held on October 3 last after a gap for eight months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sources said this time the meeting is going to be held on a limited scale in compliance with hygiene rules prescribed by the government considering the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the last meeting, only 33 leaders, who were negative with COVID test, were allowed to join the meeting. Like that meeting, this meeting will also follow the same rules in case of corona test.

Chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, at the last meeting held on October 3, eight teams had been formed for eight organisation divisions in view of speeding up the organisational activities. Those teams were formed aiming to find out all the problems and their solutions in the local and grass root levels.

At the meeting, Sheikh Hasina had also ordered for the holding of party councils at the upazila level. She also warned the local influential leaders so that they do not create obstacles in the selection of dedicated and honest persons as the leaders.

But, those directives or decisions could not be implemented properly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The party could not hold councils at many of its areas.

Several leaders of the Awami League said that in this meeting too, party president Sheikh Hasina will give important directions to speed up the organisational activities that remained held for long due to the Corona situation. Leaders in-charges will strengthen the field programs according to her guidance. They will also report on the overall organisational and humanitarian works done during the last one year.

Mahbubul Alam Hanif, joint secretary of Awami League, said, "Organisational activities are usually discussed in the meetings of our executive committee. The main topic of the discussion will be what are our future plans and how they will be implemented. Besides, the current situation and political activities will also be discussed.”

He said, since the COVID-19 situation has started to become normal, the party again has started to reorganize its organisational activities.
