The Highway Police has launched an artificial intelligence (AI)-based ‘Auto Fine System’ to ensure traffic discipline on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway.

From now on, traffic violations including speeding, driving on the wrong side of the road and risky overtaking will be automatically detected and fined, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said.

He made the remarks as the chief guest at the inauguration of the modern AI camera-based system at the Highway Police Command and Control Monitoring Centre at Meghnaghat in Sonargaon Upazila of Narayanganj on Tuesday (August 18) afternoon.

The Home Minister said the Highway Police had taken a groundbreaking initiative to restore discipline on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway. A total of 490 AI cameras have already been installed to bring the highway from Chittagong to Dhaka under technology-based surveillance.

“If someone exceeds the speed limit, violates traffic laws, drives in the opposite direction or overtakes in prohibited places, the cameras will detect it and a fine will be imposed automatically,” he said.

The minister said information about the fine would immediately be transferred to the BRTA database, after which an SMS would be sent to the registered mobile phone number of the vehicle owner. The fine could then be paid online or through mobile payment services.

In case of repeated violations, cancellation of the vehicle’s registration would be considered in accordance with existing BRTA laws, he added.

He said the Highway Police, Bangladesh Police and social media would launch a massive awareness campaign about the new system. The government hopes the initiative will encourage people to obey traffic laws and help reduce road accidents.

The programme was chaired by Additional IGP of Highway Police Faruk Ahmed.

Among those present as special guests were Bangladesh Road Transport Federation President and Member of Parliament Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, Narayanganj-3 constituency Member of Parliament Azharul Islam Mannan, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Manjur Morshed Chowdhury, the Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner, and officials and political leaders from various law enforcement agencies.

The AI-based ‘Auto Fine System’ has been introduced on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway to improve road safety, strengthen traffic discipline and ensure quick, transparent and technology-based action against traffic law violators.
