.Farmers and agriculture officials here are expecting additional wheat yield due to favourable weather condition and government’s incentive for peasants this year.
Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) office sources said farmers cultivated wheat on 4255 hectares of land with a production target 13403 tonnes.
They said farmers cultivated wheat on 980 hectares of land in Islampur , 950 hectares in Jamalpur Sadar, 850 hectares in Dewanganj, 520 hectares in Melandah, 470 hectares in Bakshiganj, 335 hectares in Madarganj and 150 hectares in Sarishabari Upazila.
Additional Deputy Director at DAE Mohammad Shakhawatul Ikram said due to favourable weather, absence of pest attack and intensive care, farmers are expecting good yield of wheat this year.
He said if the weather remains well, per hectare yield of wheat is expected to come 3.6 tonnes against the target 3.15 tonnes. As a result, additional 1915 tonnes wheat is likely to be produced, he added.
DAE sources said in a view to increase the wheat production, agriculture department disbursed incentive among 10,000 small and marginal farmers in the district.
Under the programme, 200 tonnes wheat seed and 200 tonnes fertiliser were distributed among the farmers.
