Activitites of new bldg of Meherpur General Hospital yet to start

Even after 3 months of inauguration, the activities of the new building of Meherpur 250-bed General Hospital have not started. As a result, the people of the district are deprived of adequate medical facilities. Although it has 250 beds in its name, the highest medical center in the district with a facility of 100 beds. The hospital authorities are blaming the contractor as the reason for not starting the work of the new building. And the Public Works Department says the building will be handed over by June.

 Although it has 250 beds in name, the hospital is being managed with 100 beds facilities and manpower. An average of 300 to 400 patients are admitted here every day and more than 1000 different types of patients are receiving emergency and outpatient treatment. If the newly constructed building is opened, the sufferings of the service aspirants will be reduced. The infrastructure of the building, doctors, patient beds, medicine, everything is inadequate in this hospital. More than three to four times the capacity of patients are admitted and take treatment here. As a result, the patients have to stay in piles sometimes on the floor and sometimes on the balcony to take medical treatment. Meanwhile, a new six-stored building has been constructed at a government expenditure of Tk 725 million, but the building has not been handed over due to various complications including lack of furniture and negligence of the contractor. The hospital authorities are struggling to treat the crowded patients. The residents of the district demanded that the new building along with other facilities be launched soon.

Superintendent of Meherpur General Hospital, Zamir Mohammad Hasibur Sattar said, if the new building is opened, it will be possible to open various medical facilities. He said that the patients will get better treatment and it will be easier to provide services to the authorities.

Meherpur Public Works Department, Executive Engineer, Shambhu Ram Pal said, the work on the six-stored building of the hospital has been completed long ago, but it has not been possible to hand over some ancillary works.  He said that it will be possible to handed over before the month of June 2024.
