Accused dies in Rajbari district jail

Shahidul Biswas (43), an accused in the cheque dishonor case, died after falling ill in Rajbari district jail. The family claims that he died due to the negligence of the jail authorities.

He died on Tuesday (January 23) around 7:30 a.m. while undergoing treatment at Rajbari Sadar Hospital.

Shahidul Biswas is the son of Abul Biswas of Bahirchar village of Baliakandi upazila of Rajbari.

Rezaul Biswas, the younger brother of Shahidul Biswas, said that his elder brother used to deal in jute in Baharpur market of Baliakandi. On May 19, 2023, the police arrested his brother and sent him to court in a case of cheeque dishonor. The court ordered his brother to be sent to Rajbari District Jail. Since then his brother remained in the district jail. 

15 days ago they met his brother in jail. However, around 6:30 am, the prison authorities called them and told them that his brother was sick. At around 7 o'clock they reached the prison gate and heard that his brother had died. Rezaul claimed that his brother was completely healthy.

Jail Superintendent of Rajbari District Jail Mohammad Abdur Rahim said that around 6 am, Shahidul Biswas suddenly fell ill after feeling pain in his chest. He was immediately admitted to Rajbari Sadar Hospital. He died shortly after admission in hospital. We think he died due to stroke. The process of sending the body to Rajbari Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem is underway. The actual cause of death will be known after receiving the post-mortem report.

Abdullah Al Mamun, senior staff nurse in charge of the emergency department of Rajbari Sadar Hospital, said that Shahidul Biswas was admitted to Rajbari Sadar Hospital at 6:30 am with chest pain. He died 30 minutes later around 7:30.
