Accurate statistics can be the best way of adopting proper development planning to take the country forward successfully through facing all the existing challenges, including the adverse impact of climate change and natural disasters.

All the authorities and others concerned should come forward and work together for collecting and furnishing authentic statistics and information of all the nation-building issues. Administrative officials and other stakeholders came up with the observation while addressing a post-rally discussion held at the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) office here Tuesday.

Rajshahi divisional and district offices of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics jointly hosted the discussion in observance of the National Statistics Day-2024.

The theme of this year's National Statistics Day is "Smart Statistics, Stairs of Development" (Smart Parishongkhan, Unnoyoner Sopan).

Commissioner of Rajshahi Division Dr Dewan Humayun Kabir addressed the discussion as the chief guest with Deputy Commissioner Shamim Ahmed in the chair.

Chairman of the Department of Statistics at Rajshahi University Prof Rezaul Karim, Deputy Directors of Local Government Division Parvej Raihan and Ashraful Islam and Additional Superintendent of Police Shahjahan Mian also spoke.

Deputy Director of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) Kazal Rekha welcomed the participants.

Commissioner Dr Humayun Kabir said no nation can develop without statistics as future planning and development depend on it. Accurate statistics frame the stair of improved life while unauthentic and error statistics can fetch devastation, he added.

He, however, attributed that flawless statistics can play a pioneering roletowards proper planning and there is no alternative to qualitative statistical information for formulating effective planning.

He expected that the persons and others engaged in census and other ongoing survey activities will play a responsible role in this regard. He said acceptance of data and findings largely depended on competency of statisticians.

Highlighting the importance of statistics, the divisional commissioner said data and findings are the main ingredients of planning that couldn't be full-filled without statistics.
