Dhaka University authorities have decided to waive accommodation and transportation fees from students as the university, including the residential hall, was closed during the pandemic.

This information has been given in a notification signed by the acting registrar of the university Prabir Kumar Sarkar on Thursday.

It has been decided that since the university has been closed since March 2020, the transportation fee and residential fee will be waived till the commencement of normal education activities. According to the notification, students who have already paid accommodation and transportation fees will be adjusted.

Although the class was online during the pandemic, the students could not fill the admission and examination forms within the stipulated time.

Recently, many of the students have to pay the accommodation fee for the hall and the transportation fee for the university bus when they go to fill the admission and examination forms.

Although the students did not use the transport facility of the university during the pandemic, they were asked to pay 1,080 taka. In addition, the admission receipts include annual fee of Tk 144 to Tk 650 for the residential students.

The BCL had recently called for the withdrawal of these fees, tagging them as ‘inhumane'. Saddam Hussein, former general secretary of Dhaka University Central Students' Union, also made the demand as a student representative at the university's annual senate session on June 24.
