Border Guard Police (BGP) of Myanmar allegedly picked up nine Bangladeshi fishermen with their trawler from the Naf River at Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
The identities of the fishermen have not been confirmed immediately. However, all of them are from Shah Porir Dwip, officials of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said quoting local sources.
However, the trawler carrying fishermen is owned by Mohammad Kalam alias Kalam Majhee of Sabrang union of Shah Porir Dwip area.
In-charge of Saint Martin station of Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) Lt Md Arifuzzaman Roni confirmed the matter.
According to Lt Md Arifuzzaman Roni and local union parishad member Md Nurul Amin, the fishermen went to catch fish in the river on Tuesday morning with current net.
When the boat broke down and was floating in the river, a team of BGP picked them up and took them to Hassurata Border checkpoint of Myanmar, they added.
Confirming the incident, Lt Col Mohammed Faisal Hasan Khan, commander of BGB Camp 2 in Teknaf, said: “We are contacting the BGP officials. We hope to get the fishermen back soon.”
