89 illegal brick kilns polluting air in N’ganj to be shut

On charges of polluting air, the Department of Environment (DoE) has decided to shut down all operations of 89 brick kilns in Narayanganj district.

DoE sources claimed that in the last few months due to transports not plying and factories remaining closed due to COVID-19 the climate of the country including Narayanganj was improved and pollution was less than ever. 

However, when the transports started plying again and smoke emitting from factories operation resumed the condition of air deteriorated again.

According to Air Quality Index (AQI) of World Health Organization, 0-50 indicate good air, 51-100 is medium, 101-150 is warning, 151-200 is unhygienic, 201-300 very unhygienic and 301-500 indicates acute unhygienic air quality. 

On the evening of January 18, the standard of air in Narayanganj was 224 AQI that indicated very unhygienic air condition. Specialist physicians considered that the air pollution triggering health risk of the inhabitants of Narayanganj district like as increasing lungs disease and losing air system of respiratory also infected by virus and bacteria due to air pollution.

Mohammad Jiyaul Haq, director of environment department told the media that Dhaka and its adjacent places 30 brick kiln had already been demolished and 400 other illegal brick kilns have been listed in Dhaka, Narayananj and Gazipur district. All the listed brick kilns are to be evicted within the next two to three months through mobile court operations.

Assistant Director Abdul Gafur of Narayanganj environment office said that we were directed earlier and accordingly we conducted drive against 10 brick kiln immediately. 

Deputy Director Abdullah Al Mamun of Narayanganj DoE office said that we have a list of 89 illegal brick kilns. Among them 10 were under completion of drive those are mostly situated at Baktabali area under Fatulla police station. The next number of brick kiln will be demolish soon in view of improving air status.
