8 tanneries fined

The Department of Environment (DoE) conducted a drive and fined eight tannery factories a total of taka 21 lakh for allegedly polluting the environment and the nearby Dhaleshwari River.  

The DoE authorities also warned the factory owners to take proper measures to stop immediately polluting Tannery industrial zone in Savar, on the outskirts of the capital on Wednesday.  

The factories are Anjuman Trading Corporation Ltd, Kahinur Tannery, Unicorn Leather, Gulshan Tannery, Velex Agencies Ltd, Kid Leather, Superior Leather and Tippera Tannery. 

Rubina Ferdousy said, the factories were constantly polluting nearby River and the environment by releasing factory waste into the River for the last few years, even some of them operating factories without the environmental certificate. The authorities also collected untreated liquid wastes from the rainwater drain and it will be sent to the lab for analysis. 

However, the factories were refused to make any comment to the media, regarding the allegations during the drive.  Rubina Ferdousy, Deputy Secretary and Director (Monitoring & Enforcement) of DoE, led the mobile court drive in cooperation with local police, while Shaheda Begum, Deputy Director, and other officials were present at the time.
