70 pc couples use family planning methods in Rangpur division

Seventy percent able couples of Rangpur division are currently adopting family planning methods against the figure of 61.6 percent couples at the national level, reports BSS.

Health experts disclosed the information at a post-rally discussion organised by the Department of Family Planning (DFP) to observe the World Population Day- 2019 at the conference room of the Civil Surgeon in Sadar Hospital premises on Thursday.

The DFP in association with the divisional and district level health administrations, United Nations Family Planning Association and other organisations chalked out programmes to observe the day.

The programmes included – rally, discussion and distribution of prizes among 20 best family planning assistants and female visitors, public representatives and organisations for their extraordinary contribution to contain population growth in the region. Acting Divisional Commissioner Md. Zakir Hossain attended the discussion as the chief guest with Divisional Director of the DFP Dr Md. Mahbub Alam in the chair. Divisional Director (Health) Dr. Mostafa Khaled, District Council Chairman Chhafia Khanom, Civil Surgeon Dr Abu Md. Zakirul Islam, Additional District Magistrate Arafat Rahman and Sadar Upazila Chairman Nasima Zaman Boby addressed as special guests. Deputy Director of the DFP for Rangpur Dr Sheikh Md. Saidul Islam discussed the programmes being implementing by the government to provide education on family planning issues to able couples to make them aware of containing population growth.

Dr Mahbub Alam suggested for ensuring health education for adolescents, teenage girls and women and preventing adolescent pregnancy. He said stopping child marriage will reduce maternal and neonatal deaths which will help us attain sustainable development goals. The chief guest said the country has achieved huge success in containing population growth through popularizing the family planning programmes.

He called for encouraging all able couples in adopting short and long-term as well as permanent methods of family planning and stressed on proper functioning of community clinics, union health and family welfare centers, mother and children welfare centers.
