7.5 lakh pupils to get Measles, Rubella vaccine in Ctg

The Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) authorities will administer Measles-Rubella vaccine   to 752,564 children as part of a 44-day nationwide vaccination campaign beginning on Saturday.

Of the children, 301,036 are aged between 9 months to and 5 years and 451,538 children are between 5 years and 10 years in 41 wards of the city will be vaccinated.

CCC Chief Health Officer Dr Selim Akhter Chowdhury briefed the media on the vaccination program on Thursday.

Chowdhury said that even if a child of a certain age has been vaccinated against measles and rubella before, one dose of the vaccine should be taken as an additional dose during the campaign.

Hygiene rules, social distancing and wearing masks must be followed at the vaccination center, he added. CCC Health Officer Dr. Mohammad Ali, Dr SanwarAlam, DrAshraf, Divisional Coordinator of WHO Dr ImungPru Chowdhury were present at the press conference.

A control room (No. 031-634584, 031-616555) will remain open at the Chittagong General Hospital during the campaign.

Measles is usually spread by coughing and sneezing among others who come in contact with an infected patient.

While Rubella is an acute, contagious viral infection that is transmitted by airborne droplets when infected people sneeze or cough. Humans are the only known host. Rubella virus infection usually causes a mild fever and rash in children and adults, infection during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, can result in miscarriage, fetal death, stillbirth, or infants with congenital malformations, known as congenital rubella syndrome (CRS).
