6th bridge over Sangu river awaits inauguration

Thousands of locals on both sides of the Sangu River, which flows between Goalia Khola in Bandarban Sadar Union and Kuhalang Union, have long demanded a bridge over the Sangu River.

The long standing demand of the locals has been met. The construction of the bridge has radically changed the lives of the locals. On-the-spot inspection of the area shows that some have increased vegetable cultivation and some have set up new business establishments in search of new life. Locals used to travel by boat before the bridge was built and the traffic would stop after 10 pm, now they are returning home safely at any time of the night. Earlier, agricultural products were transported by boat or by laborers and now traders are transporting vegetables from vegetable fields to different places including Chittagong by loading them in truck. Farmers used to sell their produced vegetable at Tk 25-30 per kg and after the bridge, they are selling vegetables from the field at double the price. Paddy trader Sudhir Das said that earlier both traders and farmers used to be less profitable due to transporting goods by boat with the help of laborers.

Khorshed Alam, a vegetable grower, used to cultivate beans in fourty cents of land last year and the profit was less. Due to the bridge, he has planted beans at 100 cents of land this time. He hopes to get one lakh Tk this year excluding all expenses.

Locals in the area said that it was a nightmare for patients and pregnant women as the communication system was nothing but a difficult obstacle to them. But as the bridge is ready to be inaugurated, life will be far easier for the patients and students in the area.

Both Somaiya Sultana and Novel Barua are 9th grade students at SES DP Model High School in Goalia said that their parents would not let them go to the school during monsoon season as the water level increases rapidly in Sangu River. Now that the bridge has been built, they 25/26 students, go to school safely with joy in minds, for which there is no end to their gratitude to Minister Bir Bahadur Ushwe Singand the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Nurul Islam, UP member of Kuhalong Union's 6th ward, said that with the construction of the bridge, farmers are now getting double the value of their produce. Sa Nu Pru Marma, chairman of Kuhalang Union No 2, said that the bridge over the Sangu River at Goaliakhola-Chemimukh has changed the life style of the locals. On behalf of the people of Kuhalong Union, he expressed his deep gratitude to the authorities for this.

The bridge, implemented by the Bandarban Local Government Engineering Department, has been completed and will be inaugurated soon, said Md Zillur Rahman, Executive Engineer, Bandarban Local Government Engineering Department.
