The collection of nomination forms for the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election completed on Tuesday and a total of 658 nomination papers have been collected against 28 posts of the DUCSU.
Meanwhile, the left-leaning student coalition and Islami Chhatra Shibir announced their own panels to contest DUCSU election.
The chief returning officer of DUCSU at a press briefing on Tuesday said that on Tuesday students collected 93 forms and in total, 658 forms have been sold.
Today (Wednesday) is the last day for submitting nomination forms. After that it will be known how many candidates will contest for which posts.
According to the schedule, the last day for withdrawal of nomination papers is August 25. The following day the final list of candidates will be published.
At the briefing, the Chief Returning Officer said, “Only valid students of the university have collected nomination forms for DUCSU. No one has collected nomination under any party identity.”
He also said that until the day before voting, if a candidate’s name is found on the list of criminals, there is scope to exclude them from candidacy.
Left alliance, Shibir announce full panels
Meanwhile, the left-leaning student coalition and Islami Chhatra Shibir have announced their own panels to contest the upcoming DUCSU election.
The left-leaning student coalition has announced its full panel "Protirodh Porshad" to contest the DUCSU election.
The panel will be led by Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Emi, former vice-president of Shamsun Nahar Hall Students' Union, who will run for the position of vice-president (VP).
Dhaka University unit president of Bangladesh Chhatra Union Meghmallar Bosu has been nominated for the position of general secretary (GS), while Md Jabir Ahmed Jubel, general secretary of Biplobi Chhatra Moitri, will contest for assistant general secretary (AGS).
The announcement was made on Tuesday at a press conference held at Modhur Canteen by Md Jabir Ahmed Jubel.
The coalition comprises Bangladesh Chhatra Union, Socialist Students' Front, Biplobi Chhatra Moitri, Chhatra Council, Chhatra Juba Andolon, Pahari Chhatra Parishad, Gonotantrik Chhatra Moncho, along with general students.
Apart from the top three posts, Mozammel Haque, convener of Dhaka University branch of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front will contest the post of secretary for liberation war and democratic movement.
Nuzia Hasin Rasha, president of DU branch of Biplobi Chhatra Maitri, will contest the common room, reading room and cafeteria secretary post. Akash Ali has been announced for the human rights and law secretary position.
Other nominations by Protirodh Parishad include Liton Tripura for career development secretary, Ninad Khan for transport secretary, Naim Uddin for international relations secretary, Faria Matin (Ila) for literature and culture secretary, Maliha Tabassum for sports secretary, Abu Mujahid Akash for social service secretary, Sheikh Tasnuva Srishti for health and environment secretary, Almgeir Hossain for research and publications secretary, and Fatin Ishrak for science and technology secretary.
For member posts, the alliance has announced names of Rajekuzzaman Jewel, Wakar Rahman Sourav, Md Tofsirullah, Mishkatul Mashiat (Tanisha), Atika Anzum Orthi, Prithin Marma, Mohammad Mustakim, Israt Jahan Imu, Ania Fahmin, Rahnuma Ahmed Niret, Sajid Ul Islam and Hema Chakma.
Shibir-backed panel 'Oikyoboddho Shikkharthi Jote'
The Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed panel 'Oikyoboddho Shikkharthi Jote' has submitted its nomination papers for the DUCSU polls.
Leaders and activists of the organisation submitted the nomination papers to Chief Returning Officer Professor Mohammad Jasim Uddin at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of the university in the afternoon.
Vice-president candidate Md Abu Shadik Kayem said they expect impartial behaviour from the university administration and teachers during the polls.
"We are hopeful the election will be lively with the participation of our panel, other student organisations, and independent candidates. In light of the aspirations of the July Revolution, we will soon publish our manifesto before the students," he added.
Shadik further said that regardless of the election results, their organisation will sincerely accept the outcome.
Earlier on Mnday, Chhatra Shibir announced its full 28-member panel for the Duscu polls. Alongside party leaders and activists, the panel includes representatives of ethnic minorities, a student injured in the July uprising, and students from 'Up Bangladesh' and 'Inquilab Mancha'.
As per the announcement, Abu Shadik Kayem will contest for the vice-president (VP) post, while SM Farhad and Mohiuddin Khan will run for general secretary (GS) and assistant general secretary (AGS) respectively.
Other candidates include Fatema Tasnim Juma for Liberation War and Democratic Movement secretary, Iqbal Hayder for Science and Technology secretary, Jasimuddin Khan for International Affairs secretary, Asif Abdullah for Student Transport secretary, Shariful Islam Muaj for Social Services secretary, and Arman Hossain for Sports secretary.
