Low pressure over Bay of Bengal and its adjacent areas accompanied by heavy rain caused immense sufferings to the people of Cox’s Bazar. Cox’s Bazar maritime port was asked to hoist local signal no. 3.
Moreover, one fisherman died and six trawlers capsized in the Bay when these were returning after fishing. The incident happened due to the downpour and bad weather. Besides, there are still more than 100 trawlers in the sea. 501 millimeter rainfall was recorded in Cox’s Bazar recently which is the highest rainfall of all time.
The hotel and motel zones are inundated due to the heavy rain. Moreover, people of 60 villages have been marooned. A control room was opened to handle the situation. People were suffering due to the continuous rain.
The heavy rain started in Cox’s Bazar on Thursday. It has been raining with gusty wind since then. The sporadic rain and stormy weather was continuing for last two days in Cox’s Bazar.
At least six people, including woman and children, were killed in separate landslides in Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila and at a Rohingya camp of the district on Friday.
General Secretary of Cox’s Bazar district fishing trawler owners’ association Delowar Hossain said six trawlers capsized in Inani point and west point of Cox’s Bazar sea beach on Friday afternoon when they were returning after fishing. Although all staff and fishermen of the trawlers managed to swim ashore, one of them died.
He also said more than 100 fishing trawlers did not return yet. It was not possible to contact with them. He also said that the fishing trawlers went in the sea for fishing as there was no alert from the met office earlier. However, they signaled the trawlers to come back after sudden gusty wind, bad weather and cautionary signal no. 3.
The people of 60 villages of Cox’s Bazar, including Teknaf, Ukhiya, Ramu and Sadar Upazila, were marooned due to the heavy rain. The people of these areas have been suffering a lot, the local representatives of the areas said.
Cox’s Bazar Hotel Zone Guest House Owners Association president Abul Kashem Sikdar said many hotels have been inundated due to heavy rain. The tourists are stuck at the hotels. The ground floor of many hotels is inundated. The tourists were suffering due to the rain, he added.
Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nilufer Yeasmin Choudhury went to Dikkul area at Sadar Upazila to see the family members of the deceased who were killed in the landslide. She said financial aid has been given to them on behalf of the government. People living at the foot of the hills and risky areas are being asked to move to safe shelter.
Assistant Meteorologist of Cox's Bazar Met Office Abdul Hannan said Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Mongla and Payra maritime ports have been asked to hoist local cautionary signal no. 3 due to the low-pressure at the sea. The highest rainfall of 501 millimeters in was recorded Cox’s Bazar. There was no record of such heavy rain in the district earlier. It may rain the whole on Saturday, he added.
Cox’s Bazar District Administration has opened a control room for the bad weather.
Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Salahuddin said all preparatory measures have been taken to face the natural calamity. The family members of the deceased of the landslide were given financial aid. Moreover, measures have been taken to help the marooned people due to the heavy rain. People of the risky areas were also asked through loudspeakers to take shelter at a safe place, he added.
