Six students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to ensure their security.

In an open letter written to the prime minister, they also alleged that they are facing bullying, harassment and even getting death threats because they get involved in progressive politics.

The students made the allegations at a press conference held in front of BUET Shaheed Minar at 3:00 pm on Thursday.

The six students are Ashik Alam, Sagar Biswas, Aritra Ghosh, Argha Das, Tanveer Swapnil, and Mishu Datta.

Claiming that they believe in the spirit of independence, they told the prime minister that BUET banned student politics following the killing of Abrar Fahad.

They were humiliated and harassed only because of their pro-liberation and pro-independence stand, even though they were not involved in ragging or violating the university's regulations, they added.

“If we want to follow the footsteps of Father of the Nation, we have to face bullying and harassment,” the letter reads.

“We want the right to freedom of expression. We do not want our campus to be a den of terrorists. We do not want to see any murder of students like Deep, Sony and Abrar,” the letter added.

The students also alleged that they are facing criticism if they keep the portraits of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Even they failed to establish a club named ‘Bangabandhu o Muktijuddho Chetana’ due to fierce criticism.

Shibir and Hizb ut-Tahrir men were carrying out their political activities on the campus, they said.

Earlier on Wednesday, the same group of students alleged that they received death threats.

They also submitted a memorandum to Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Satya Prashad Majumdar, seeking security.
