The Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) says 550 buses plying in capital Dhaka will take part in the transportation of passengers from the capital to various destinations in the country during the upcoming Eid.

These buses will provide service along with long distance buses.

BRTC Chairman Md. Tajul Islam disclosed this at an exchange meeting organized at Motijheel BRTC building in the capital on Monday.

He said, “We had a meeting last week on the occasion of Eid. It has been decided that we have 600 buses in Dhaka city. From here, keeping 50 buses for Dhaka city, the remaining 550 buses will be added to the Eid service. Apart from this, the rest of our long distance buses will run regularly. This decision has been taken as the Eid holiday is long.”

When asked about the Eid plan, he said, we will give it in a few days in the form of a public notice in newspapers.

Tajul Islam said, “Only 34 buses of our fleet are on lease. BRTC is longer leasing its buses. Gradually it will be reduced to zero.”

He said, “In 2020, out of 1,825 buses, 885 buses were on route; In 2021, out of 1,762 buses, 1,006 buses were on-route, in 2022, out of 1,350 buses, 1,233 buses were on-route and in 2023, out of 1,350 buses, 1,253 buses were on-route.”

At this time, he said, BRTC which was once a loss making project, is now a role model for development. BRTC was once a non-profit government institution, but it is now a profitable institution. We are working to increase service along with profit. Many people ask me if BRTC passengers have decreased or not. But no, currently passengers have doubled, income is also doubling.

Tajul Islam said that passengers have increased by 25 percent compared to last year. Earlier, we could pay Tk 6.30 crore as salary, but currently we are paying Tk 10.63 crore. Regular salary and bonus are paid to its people. Apart from this, I am also paying the outstanding salary and bonus.”
