A Sunamganj court has sent 54 husbands to their wives and children as per their desire, in 65 cases of torture and dowry in Sunamganj on Monday noon. In 11 other cases, the husbands were sentenced to different terms of imprisonment.

Judge of the Sunamganj Women and Child Abuse Tribunal Md. Zakir Hossain gave the exceptional verdict in these cases. After announcing the verdict of the case, the court sent the reunited couples home with a floral reception.

According to court sources, 65 women from different upazilas of Sunamganj had filed cases against their husbands, including abuse of women and dowry. The trial of these cases was going on for a long time. The abused women and their children were starving and living an uncertain life. The judge gave the verdict based on the condition that the husbands would rectify themselves.  However, the abused wives of 11 families testified against their husbands and the allegations against the husbands were proved. Therefore they were sentenced to different terms of imprisonment. The court gave the verdict considering the harassment of the case and the future of the family and the children of the couple.

Several husbands and wives said they have been pursuing the case for two to three years. Advocate Obaidul Haque Chowdhury, who is prosecuting the case on behalf of the defendant said, several incidents lead to family disputes. As a result of this dispute, married life gets ruined and couples face harassment at courts. The judge of the Sunamganj Women and Child Abuse Tribunal has saved the lives of many couples on his own initiative. I was the lawyer of a defendant in one of the cases. We are satisfied with this verdict. Advocate Nantu Roy, Public Prosecutor (PP) of the Women and Child Abuse Tribunal, said it was a groundbreaking verdict. Earlier, the court had given similar verdicts in 47 cases. Sunamganj Women and Child Abuse Tribunal judge said, there will be trouble in the family but everyone should try to adjust.

On November 25 last year, the same judge sent 47 families to normal life through a compromise in the case of 47 separate women and child abuse tribunals in one day.
