Residents are voluntarily demolishing their houses after the eviction drive was announced at Laldia Char in Patenga of Chattogram.
Visiting the char area on Monday morning, it was seen that the residents of the char were going with their belongings elsewhere in trucks and vans.
Following the High Court's order, the Chattogram Port Authority announced the start of eviction from Laldia Char on Monday morning. Soon after the announcement, the residents of the Char were seen breaking their houses willingly and moving away with their belongings.
According to Chittagong port sources, the eviction drive will be conducted on 52 acres of land in Laldia Char. This is the largest eviction operation in the port's history, officials said.
Port sources also said a detailed report on the eviction operation would have to be submitted to the court by March 8. So this campaign is being conducted.
Rear Admiral Mohammad Shahjahan, Chairman of the Chattogram Port Authority, told reporters on Monday morning, “Residents of Laldia Char are leaving voluntarily.
