50 JS bodies formed

All the parliamentary standing committees on different ministries and parliamentary affairs have been formed after 12th parliament started its journey on January 30.

Several committees were formed headed by immediate past ministers, who were dropped from the incumbent cabinet.

Main opposition Jatiya Party lawmaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed is leading the Public Accounts Committee, one of the most significant committees while an independent lawmaker Mohammad Huchamuddin Chowdhury will lead the religious affairs body.

The 12th parliamentary elections were held on January 7 amid boycott by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led alliance.

Ruling Awami League won a massive victory in the 12th parliamentary elections, securing 223 seats which helped the party to form the new government led by Sheikh Hasina for the fifth term.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already been elected as the Leader of the House and she will be leading the House for the fourth term in a row.

Jatiya Party (Ershad) appeared as the main opposition by winning only 11 seats and independent candidates, mostly rebels of the AL, got 62 seats.

On the fifth day of the first session, the 12 more bodies were formed while 38 bodies were formed earlier. 

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has been made the Chairman on the Rules of Procedures and a committee of Privileges. 

Of the other committees, Kazi Keramat Ali has been made the chairman on information and broadcasting ministry, Saifuzzaman Chowdhury on land, AKM Abdul Momen on foreign affairs ministry, Sharif Ahmed on housing and public works ministry, Bir Bahadur Ushei Singh on Hill tracts affairs ministry, benzir Ahmed on home affairs ministry,  Imran Ahmed on expatriate welfare and overseas employment ministry,  Kazi Nabil Ahmed on Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology ministry, Mostafizur Rahman on law, justice and parliamentary affairs ministry and Kamrul Islam on private members bill. 

As many as 12 committees were formed on the second day of the first session after Chief Whip Noor-e-Alam Chowdhury Liton placed the proposals, approved by the leader of the House and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Veteran parliamentarian Amir Hossain Amu was made the chairman on ministry on industries while Abul Kalam Azad on the public accounts committee, Captain AB Tajul Islam on committee on estimates, Muhibur Rahman Manik on committee on government assurances, Mohammad Sadik on public administration ministry, Golam Dastagir Gazi on jute and textile ministry, Sazzadul Hassan on civil aviation and tourism ministry, Shafiqul Islam on LGRD, Shajahan Khan on food ministry and Chief Whip Noor-e-Alam Chowdhury was made chairman of the House committee.  

On January 5, another 16 parliamentary standing committees were formed, all of which were headed by the treasury bench lawmakers except one by an independent MP.

Independent lawmaker from Sylhet-5 Mohammad Huchamuddin Chowdhury was made chief of the parliamentary standing committee on religious affairs ministry.

Former education minister Nurul Islam Nahid was made the chairman of the JS body on education ministry, Zahid Ahsan Russel on youth and sports, Asaduzzaman Noor on cultural affairs, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim on health, Begum Sagufta Yasmin on women and child affairs, Rafiqul Islam on Liberation War Affairs, Aftab Uddin on primary and mass education, HM Ibrahim on labour and employment, Tipu Munshi on commerce, SM Rejaul Karim on fisheries and livestock, Abdur Razzaque on agriculture, Dipankar Talukder on environment and ASM Firoz on disaster management.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was made the chairman of the petition committee while deputy Speaker Shamsul Haque Tuku was made the chairman of the library committee.

On Tuesday, AHM Mustafa Kamal, who was the finance minister of the previous AL government, was made the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on finance ministry.

Immediate past planning minister MA Mannan became the chairman of the committee on planning ministry while former health minister Zahid Maleque became the helm of committee on the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Former health minister AFM Ruhul Haque has become the Chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the social welfare ministry.

ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury was made the chief of the committee on railways ministry. He was the chairman of this committee in the last parliament as well.

Former water resources minister Ramesh Chandra Sen was reappointed as the chief of the parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Water Resources.

Rejwan Ahammad Taufiq became the chairman of the committee on Ministry of Road, Transport and Bridges, while Ziaur Rahman on energy ministry, Mahfuzur Rahman on shipping ministry and Elias Uddin Mollah was made the Chairman of JS body on defence ministry.
