Five people, including three elderly women, were killed, and three others critically injured, when a tree fell on an Easybike in Baliya area of Dhaka’s Dhamrai, outside the capital on Monday. The deceased were identified as Md Nuru, 65, and his wife Jahanara Begum, 60, hailing from Baichal village of Dhamrai, Md. Shamsul, 70, from Kamarpara village of Dhamrai, Majeda Begum, 65, and Aysha Begum, 60, from Teligram village.

Dipak Chandra Saha, officer-in-charge of Dhamrai police station confirmed the matter to Bangladesh Post. He said, “A large sized tree fell on an easybike on Baliya-Kawalipara regional road when trees were being cut for road widening work, leaving five people dead on the spot and 3 others injured.”

“They all were returning home by an Easybike after withdrawing ‘old age allowances’ from Baliya Union Parishad of Dhamrai Upazila”, he added. Locals alleged the accident happened as the leaseholder had not adopted any safety measures for the tree cutting work next to the regional road.

When contacted, Mojibur Rahman, Upazila forest officer of Dhamrai told Bangladesh Post, “I have just heard about the incident. Hasan Ali, the leaseholder of the work may not have taken proper safety measures despite strict conditions of the tender that the leaseholder must ensure proper safety during cutting the trees, and complete the work without causing any harm.” “I will inform the matter to our superior authorities,” the forest officer added.
