Following the instruction of Media and Publication Wing of the Police Headquarters, police personnel detained five students on Tuesday in connection with insulting the national anthem by making a TikTok video.

Talking to the Bangladesh Post, Assistant Inspector General Mir Sohel Rana confirmed it.

They were identified as Arif Ali, Alif Ahmed Sujan, Mishkat Hossain, Nur-e-Islam Alif and a teenager.

Police detained them from different areas of Bogura town in an overnight drive.

AIG Sohel Rana said, “We came to know about the TikTok video recently. After watching the mocked video, we found that it was very disgraceful for the national anthem.”

It was produced in front of the Shaheed Minar at the Malotinagar Primary School ground in Bogura Sadar upazila.

Later, we asked the district police to trace the youths and bring them under the law.

As per our instruction, local police detained five people for defaming national anthem.

AIG Sohel Rana said, “Insulting the national anthem is a serious crime as per existing law. It was also a crime under the Digital Security Act.”

However, Inspector Abul Kalam Azad, Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Bogura Sadar Police Station told Bangladesh Post that the detainees may be released as we did not find any political motives against them.

“As their schools were remaining shut down, they had produced the video just for fun,” he added.
