A court here Wednesday sentenced five members of a gold smuggling group to life-term imprisonment for smuggling gold in Manikganj.
The court also fined the convicts Taka 50 thousand each, in default, to serve one year more in jail.
The convicted are Eahia Amin, Sheikh Aminur Rahman, Md. Moniruzzaman Roni, Sheikh Zahidul Islam and Johirul Islam Tarek.
They are the inhabitants of Satkhira, Jashore, Munshiganj and Laxmipur districts.
Senior District and Sessions Judge Joyosree Samaddar pronounced the verdict today in presence of the convicts in a crowded court.
According to the prosecution, RAB arrested five of them from a Benapol-bound passengers’ bus from Tara area on the Dhaka-Aricha highway.
Then recovered 44 kilograms of gold after searching their bodies on October 4, 2018.
Later, a case was filed with Manikganj Police Station on October 5 against the arrested.
After investigation, the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case submitted a charge-sheet against the accused.
After examining the documents and witnesses, the Judge pronounced the verdict on Wednesday.
