5 die after drinking toxic liquor in Bogura

At least five people died after taking spurious liquor in Bogra district town on Sunday night.

The diseased were identified as Ramzan Ali, 40, son of Lokman, Sumon, 38, son of Premnath of Puran Bogra area, Saju, 55, Mozahar Ali, 70, of Katnarpara Tokapotty and Abdul Jalil, 65, of Fulbari Sarkarpara.

Local sources said that Ramzan, Sumon, his father Premnath and uncle Ramnath drank liquor at a homeopathy medicine shop on Sunday night after attending a wedding ceremony in Tinmatha area of the district town.

After returning home, they all fell sick and taken to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where Sumon was declared dead and Ramzan died at a local clinic.

On the other hand, Saju, Mozahar and Abdul Jalil died in the Kalitala area.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bogura Sadar Police Station Humayun Kabir confirmed the matter. He said that the people  consumed alcohol after purchasing it from a local shop on the occasion of the marriage of Sumon’s younger brother Chanchal Rabidas on Sunday evening and fell sick afterwards.

Later that night, all five of them fell sick and died in different places of the upazila.

Police teams were sent to houses of the victims. However, family members denied that they died from alcohol poisoning, the OC added.
