The 49th anniversary of the martyrdom of Birshreshtha Shaheed Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir, one of the recipients of the seven highest gallantry awards of the Liberation War, was observed in Chapainawabganj on Monday.
On the occasion, Chapainawabganj district unit of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad and the district administration jointly arranged various programmes. The day-long programme began by hoisting the national flag and placing wreaths at his grave and the memorial built in his honour at Rehaichar on the bank of Mahananda river in the morning.
Woman MP Ferdousi Islam Jessy, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Chapainawabganj Md Manzurul Islam Hafiz, Police Super AHM Abdur Rakib and other paid homage by placing wreaths at his memorial. Different socio-cultural and political organsations also paid their respect by placing wreaths at the memorial of Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir.
On this day in 1971, just two days before the final victory of independent Bangladesh, Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir was killed in a battle with the enemy at Rehaichar in Chapainawabganj town.
Every year, people of Chapainawabganj remember the day with solemnity, joy, and sorrow because Jahangir freed the-then Nawabganj subdivision from the clutches of the Pakistani occupation forces and their collaborators after a fierce fight, sacrificing his life.
The body of Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir was carried by the freedom fighters from the char area and was laid to rest on the premises of the famous Chota Shona Mosque where most of his activities took place during the war.
