At least four people were killed in a collision between a bus and a pickup van on the Tangail-Mymensingh regional highway’s Malauri area in Madhupur upazila of Tangail district on Tuesday morning.
The deceased were identified as Rabiul Islam, 28, son of Atar Ali of Mohammadpur village of Islampur Upazila of Jamalpur district; Boroilla, 42, son of Sadhu Mia of the same village; the pickup van driver Shujon Mia, 35; and his assistant Amzad Hossain.
Officer-in-charge (investigation) of Madhupur Police Station, Rasel Ahmed, said the accident occurred around 5:30am. The bus was traveling from Dhaka to Madhupur, while the pickup was heading towards Dhaka from Madhupur.
The driver and helper of the pickup truck died on the spot. Two critically injured passengers were rushed to Madhupur Health Complex, where the on-duty doctors declared them dead, he added.
Upon hearing the news, police rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies.
Further investigations are underway to determine the cause of the accident, and the bus was brought to police custody, but its driver and helper fled. After the legal process, the bodies will be handed over to the families.
