350 Pirganj families receive food package from Speaker

A total of 350 jobless labourers, beggars, disabled, divorcees and hijra community people of Pirganj upazila in Ragnpur received food package on Wednesday on behalf of Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury. 

The jobless, distressed and needy people of 50 families of each the seven unions of Choitrokol, Bhendabari, Kumedpur, Tukuria, Baro Alampur, Raipur and Panchgachhi of the upazila received the food package. Each of the beneficiary families got five kgs of rice, five kgs of potato, one kg of pulse, one piece of soap and one piece of mask in the first phase.

In the second phase, a total of 450 families, including people of 50 needy and jobless families from each of the other eight unions and Pirganj municipality of the parliamentary constituency Rangpur-6 (Pirganj) of the Speaker will get the food assistance very soon, said sources. 

Local leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) with the help of local Awami League leaders and union parishad chairmen distributed the food package in seven unions of the upazila strictly maintaining social distancing to prevent COVID-19 spread. Led by President of Rangpur district BCL Mehede Hasan Rony, leaders of Pirganj upazila BCL and union units of Awami League and union parishad chairman concerned distributed the food package.

Chairmen Ziaur Rahman Sabuz of Choitrokol union, Rabiul Islam of Bhendabari union, Mubarak Hossain Chowdhury Fuad of Kumedpur union, Ataur Rahman Mandal of Tukuria union, Hafizar Rahman of Baro Alampur union, Saidur Rahman Dulal Chowdhury of Raipur union and Lutfar Rahman Latif of Panchgachhi union were present. 

In a message on the occasion, Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has given direction to ensure providing food assistance to the socially backward people like jobless labourers and workers, rickshaw and van-cart pullers, beggars, divorcees and widows and hijra community people to take special care and stand beside them amid COVID-19 situation. 

“Like in the whole world, the spread of coronavirus infection is increasing in Bangladesh,” she said, and suggested all people to remain at home properly abiding by the 31-point direction of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to prevent COVID-19 spread.
