A 30-month-old baby, who had been allegedly tortured by her stepmother at Sreepur upazila in Gazipur, succumbed to her injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Sunday evening.
She was identified as Mariam Akter. She was daughter of UAE-expatriate Mostafa Kamal.
The two and half year old girl died after fighting for life for a month, said DMCH sources on Monday.
She sustained injuries and had to undergo a surgery due to infections caused by the torture.
Earlier on August 14, Mariam's grandfather Afaz Uddin lodged a case with Sreepur Police Station.
He alleged that Mostafa's second wife Alifa Akter Ripa, 30, tortured the minor girl in order to create pressure on her husband for transferring ownership of a multi-storey building at Sreepur municipality to her.
Mostafa married Marium's mother Sabina Yasmin eight years ago, said the case statement.
Ripa insisted Mostafa to divorce his first wife Sabina Yasmin. Mariam was only four months old then.
After divorcing his first wife, he left Mariam in Ripa's care at Sreepur while going back to Dubai.
