25 RMG factories shut in Ashulia as protests continue

Published : 18 Sep 2024 10:06 PM

At least 25 Readymade Garments (RMG) factories in Ashulia industrial were closed on Wednesday as workers of those factories refused to work in a demand to discuss various demands with the owners, although most of other factories remained reopen.

In most of the factories, workers were seen working peacefully.

Meanwhile, workers of a few number of factories at Mirpur and Gazipur continued their protests on Wednesday.

It should be mentioned a female worker was killed and over 50 others injured in clashes between two groups of RMG workers on Tuesday.

Sarwar Alam, Superintendent of Industrial Police-1, said “Twenty factories remained closed under Section 13 (1) of the Labor Act since last week while five others announced general holidays."

"Apart from this, the overall situation in the industrial sector was normal. In addition to the deployment of law enforcement officers in front of various factories for the security of the industrial area, the patrolling activities of the joint forces are continuing," he added.

He also said that the workers of the factories which were closed took position in front of the factories demanding the opening of the factories.

"We are trying to negotiate with Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association [BGMEA] and the owners to open the factories soon," he added.

Khairul Mamun Mintu, legal affairs secretary of the Bangladesh Garment Workers Trade Union Center, said, if all the factories are not reopened there is a chance of unrest again. Already yesterday a worker of Mascot Garments Ltd died amid clashes.

Moreover, closing the factory is not a solution, so the owners should open the factories and solve the problem by discussing with the workers, he added.
