2 foreign consulting firm has been appointed for the construction of Bay-Terminal.  The work was jointly awarded to Kunwa Engineering and Consulting Company Limited of Korea and Dianyang Engineering Company Limited.

The proposal was approved at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Public Procurement chaired by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on Thursday.  After the meeting, Additional Secretary to the Cabinet Md. Zahirul Islam confirmed the matter.

The cost for this work will be 126 crore 49 lakh 73 thousand 986 taka.  The long-term master plan and complete plan was to build the Bay Terminal.  The recruitment of consulting firm was in progress.  5 organizations were shortlisted.  The ministry has jointly appointed 2 Korean companies as consulting firms.  The consulting firm will make a comprehensive plan for the location of the Bay Terminal.  The plan will focus on financial and technical issues as well as its feasibility.  Above all, the Bay Terminal will be built step by step in the light of the master plan.

It will take 8-9 months to study Bay Terminal.  The study report will cover the construction of container delivery yard, brake water, channel, terminal and everything in the bay terminal.

Several countries have already expressed interest in working on the Bay Terminal project.  Among them are China Merchants Sport Holding Company Limited of China, DP World of UAE, PSA International of Singapore based company, APM Terminals of Denmark, Adani Port of India, Hyundai Group of South Korea, International Port Development Manager.

According to the port, Chattogram Port Jetty can accommodate a maximum of 1800 single container vessels and the Bay terminal can accommodate 5,000 single container vessels at a time.  Now the ships dock at the jetty based on the tides in the port.  Due to its location at sea, ships can be loaded and unloaded at the bay terminal day and night.  This will save on transportation costs and a lot of time.

At present 19 ships can be loaded at Chattogram Port Jetty Terminal at the same time and 30-35 ships can be loaded at Bay Terminal.  Due to the bend in the Karnafhuli river channel, the ships coming to the jetty have to take considerable risk.  Ships will be able to land directly at the Bay Terminal.

To reach Chattogram Port Jetty from Outer Anchorage, a ship has to cover a distance of 15 kms, whereas at the Bay Terminal Jetty it takes only 1 kms.  Goods will be able to be unloaded at the Bay Terminal and shipped directly to different parts of the country through Chattogram-Dhaka highway.
