At just 16, schoolboy Sabbir Hossain should be spending his days laughing and playing with classmates, books and notebooks in hand. Instead, he is fighting for his life on a hospital bed.
There is still hope of saving the young boy if the necessary treatment can be started quickly. Doctors have given the family hope, saying Sabbir can recover and return to a normal life if he receives chemotherapy at the right time. But the family’s efforts to arrange the treatment have come to a standstill, leaving his relatives in silent despair.
Sabbir is the son of Sajjad Hossain, a very poor three-wheeler driver from Bakshipur village of Halidhani union in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila. He is a student of Harinakundu Lal Mohammad Secondary School.
He is currently undergoing treatment under the supervision of renowned hematologist Professor Dr Kamrul Hasan in bed number 19 of ward number 901 of the Haematology Department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Recent tests revealed that he is suffering from Acute Leukemia (AML), or blood cancer.
According to doctors, Sabbir, being young, has a chance of recovering and returning to a normal life if he receives regular chemotherapy. The prospect of successful treatment brought hope to the family, but the cost has become an even greater burden than the disease itself.
For a father who earns his living day by day, it is impossible to bear the cost of complex cancer treatment. Even after borrowing some money for the initial treatment, the family has no means to begin the main chemotherapy and meet the expenses of long-term treatment.
Watching her son’s condition gradually deteriorate, his mother, Mita Khatun, is distraught. She is now going from door to door with a desperate plea to save her child.
Meanwhile, at home, Sabbir’s two sisters, Khadija and Hajera, and elder brother Mithun are shedding tears day and night. They are holding on to the hope that their brother will recover and return home.
Sabbir’s mother has made a heartfelt appeal to charitable, kind-hearted and wealthy people in society, as well as expatriate Bangladeshis, to help save a promising young life from premature death and bring a smile back to the helpless family.
With a little sympathy and financial support, 16-year-old Sabbir may get another chance at life.
