A Khulna court has sentenced 16 people to life term imprisonment for killing Awami League leader Titu Sharif in 2018.
Judge of Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Md Nazrul Islam Hawladar delivered the verdict on Sunday.
The convicts are- Sentu Chowdhury, Polash Chowdhury, Abdullah Chowdhury, Bakkar Chowdhury, Sohel Chowdhury, Shahidul Sheikh, Polash Kha alias Mafizur Khan, Tuhin Molla alias Mahmud Hasan, Sabuj Molla, Masud Molla, Rafiqul Molla, Natun Chowdhury alias Ramjan, Chowdhury Mashiur Rahman, Oli Ullah alias Babu Chowdhury, Tariqul Sardar, and Jihad Chowdhury. According to the case statement, a group of miscreants hacked Titu Sharif, senior vice-president of Awami League’s Gopalganj municipality unit and owner of Sharif Bricks and Sharif Fisheries Ltd, to death in a gruesome attack over land related dispute in Char Singati village under Naragati police station in Narail on July 1 in 2018.
On the next day, victim’s brother Mohammad Ashiquzzaman filed a murder case with Naragati police station naming 18 accused and 10 to 12 unnamed others.
Nimai Chandra Mandal, sub-inspector (SI) of Naragati police station and also the investigation officer of the case, filed the charge-sheet in court on July 24 in 2019 against 31 people.
A total of 31 witnesses, out of 36, testified in court during the trial.
