Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) ship ’Shyamol Bangla’ while patrolling the Bay of Bengal rescued 14 crew members from a lighter ship named MV Karina-1, loaded with 2,000 tonnes of wheat, near Sandwip island on Monday midnight.

While anchored in the Bay of Bengal, 10 nautical miles south of Sandwip island, the lighter vessel cracked causing water to enter into it as well as its engine room caught fire.

Hearing the news, BCG ship Shyamal Bangla rushed to the spot and rescued all the 14 sailors on board. The rescued sailors were given first aid and taken to BCG Berth Patenga for further treatment.

The rescued persons were handed over to the ship's owner Mohammad Karim Bepari and their families on Tuesday afternoon.
