A mobile court of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-2) sentenced 12 passport brokers to imprisonment for different terms after their arrest in the Agargaon passport office area in the capital on Monday.

RAB-2 senior assistant director (media) and senior ASP Shihab Karim said a team of RAB-2 arrested 12 members of the passport broker circle by conducting a special mobile court in the area adjacent to the Agargaon passport office of the capital under the direction of RAB Executive Magistrate Md Abu Hasan.

Based on confessions of the accused, each was sentenced to various terms of imprisonment and fined, he added.

The RAB official said the brokers promise passport seekers that they will manage their passports quickly and easily and take a large sum of money from them in return. Sometimes, passport seekers fall victim to their harassment.

In addition to surveillance, the law enforcers frequently caution the brokers using loudhailers in the passport office area not to harass people, but the brokers care little about it, he added.
