Twelve workers suffered burn injuries in an explosion at a shipyard in Tetultala area under Shonaichhari union at Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram on Saturday. The incident happened at SN Corporation Shipyard at 12:30pm.
The injured are identified as Jahangir, 48, Ahmed Ullah, 38, Kashem, 39, Sagor, 20, Al-Amin, 23, Karimul 21, Habib, 36, Barkat, 23, Anwar, 50, Rafiqul, 30, Rafik, 30 and Saiful, 30. Doctors said among the injured 10 people are critical.
Two units of Kumira Fire Service rushed to the spot to douse the blaze.
Agrabad Fire Service and Civil Defense Control Room Officer said that the explosion happened while workers were cutting a scrap ship at SN Corporation Shipyard in Kumira area of Sitakunda at around 12:30pm, which then ignited a fire. On information, two units of fire service rushed to spot to douse the fire.
Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) Director Brigadier General Mohammad Taslim Uddin said 12 injured people were brought to the hospital so far in the incident of explosion during cutting a ship at a shipyard in Sitakunda. They got admitted at 36 no. burnt and plastic surgery unit. Many of the injured received 80 to 90 percent burn injuries. The condition of 10 among them are critical. SN Corporation Manager (Admin) Omor Faruk said explosion of pump occurred in the engine room of the shipyard while a ship was being cut. Twelve workers were injured in the incident. We follow the rules of Department of Environment to cut ships. Proper treatment has been managed for the injured people.
On information of the explosion, Sitakunda Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Kamal Uddin visited the spot.
