Social voluntary organisation Dost Aid Bangladesh Society has provided monthly scholarships to 100 orphan students in Jamalpur to help them continue their education and prevent dropouts caused by financial hardship.
Jahangir Selim, a prominent human rights activist and director of the Human Resources Development Department of the Development Association, attended the scholarship distribution ceremony as the chief guest at the Dost Aid Conference Centre in the Kazir Akh area of Jamalpur on Saturday.
The event was chaired by Dost Aid Bangladesh Society’s Head of Accounts and Admin, Kohinur Alam Chowdhury, and moderated by Project Manager Abul Kayes. Dost Aid officials Zahurul Islam, Mazharul Islam, Shawkat Mia and Sajjad Hossain, along with other officials and local dignitaries, were present.
Under the education support programme, each student receives a monthly scholarship of Tk 2,000, totalling Tk 2 lakh. The organisation also monitors their school attendance, academic progress and possible obstacles to their education.
Speaking as the chief guest, Jahangir Selim said ensuring educational opportunities for orphaned and underprivileged children was both a humanitarian responsibility and a foundation for building a non-discriminatory society.
“Providing financial assistance to a student does not simply mean offering financial support; rather, it creates an opportunity for their dreams and potential to move forward,” he said, urging wealthy and capable members of society to come forward to support such children.
Kohinur Alam Chowdhury said Dost Aid believed education was the most powerful means of changing a child’s life.
“Our activities are not limited to providing scholarships; we also give importance to students’ regular education, school attendance and academic progress,” he said, adding that the initiative would continue in the future.
The organisation said its education programme also aims to develop the confidence, skills and potential of underprivileged children and help them become skilled, self-reliant and responsible citizens.
The organisation said its 32 projects in 40 districts are being successfully implemented with support from local administrations and communities, while its employees remain committed to transparency and accountability in activities conducted with foreign donations. #EK
