1 killed, 100 houses damaged during storm in B’baria

One person died and over a hundred houses were damaged and trees were uprooted as a storm, followed by torrential rain, lashed out in Nasirnagar and Sarailupazilas of Brahmanbaria on Saturday morning. 

The deceased was identified as Sohel Ahmed of Ashurail village in Nasirnagar upazila, said Habiba Begum, member of Burishwar union parishad.

Sohel was caught in the violent storm when he was going to Nasirnagar and died on his way to Brahmanbaria General Hospital, the UP member said.

The storm affected Ashurail, Benipara, Ichhapur, Sreenagar villages in Nasirnagar, and many villages in Sarail upazila including Budda and Kuchni, our correspondent reports quoting officials of both the upazilas.

Nazma Ashrafi, Narisnagar upazila nirbahi officer, said she heard that a man died after being caught up in the storm.

Around 100 houses were damaged in the storm, the UNO said adding that work is underway for assessing the extent of the damage in the storm.

Abdul Alim, a resident of Budda village under Sarail upazila, said the storm started around 9:45am and damaged over 10 to 15 houses within moments.

Abul Hasem, chairman of Nasirnagar Union Parishad, said as many as 50 houses of different villages under his union were damaged while a number of trees and electric poles were uprooted during the storm.
