Journalists in Rangamati formed a human chain on Thursday, protesting the recent attack on Ekhon Television’s Chattogram Bureau Chief and Special Correspondent Hossain Ziad and cameraman Parvez while they were covering a news story in Salimpur, Chattogram. The demonstration also condemned the growing number of assaults on journalists across the country and demanded justice, compensation, and safety for media professionals.
The protest was held at 11 a.m. in front of the District Administration Office. Journalists representing various television channels, newspapers, online, and digital media outlets took part in the event.
The programme was presided over by Rangamati Press Club President Anwar Al Haque. Among the speakers were Press Club General Secretary Mohammad Elias, former president S.M. Shamsul Alam, Rangamati Reporters Unity General Secretary M. Kamal Uddin, Vice President Hefazat Sabuj, Journalists Forum President Nandan Debnath, and Rangamati Journalists Network President Shantimoy Chakma, among others.
Speakers at the rally said that incidents of harassment, assault, and even killings of journalists have become alarmingly frequent across Bangladesh. The attack on Ekhon TV’s Chattogram journalists was described as another shameful example of threats faced by the media.
They urged the authorities to immediately arrest and punish those responsible, ensure proper compensation for the victims, and guarantee safety and justice for journalists so they can continue their professional duties without fear or intimidation.
