Bangladesh U19 have continued the winning streak in the ACC U19 Asia Cup 2018 with a 5-wicket win over Hong Kong in Group B match at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chittagong. Bangladesh will now face India in the semi-finals.
Pakistan bowled out Sri Lanka for 200 runs in their match at MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong. Bangladesh’s fate rested on whether Pakistan would win today but Pakistan failed to chase down the target. Sri Lanka won by 23 runs, having restricted Pakistan for 177 runs for eight in 50 overs.
Winning the toss, Bangladesh captain Towhid Hridoy had opted to bowl first, Rishad Hossain and Mrittunjoy Chowdhury shared five wickets between them as Bangladesh bowled out Hong Kong for a mere 91 runs. Bangladesh batsman Mahmu­dul’s unbeaten 32 runs took them to 92-5 with 232 balls remaining, giving young Tigers a resounding victory over Hong Kong.
Only three Hong Kong players reached double figures as Kalhan Challu was the top-scorer for Hong Kong with 16 while Kabir Sodhi made 13. Rishad picked up 3-11 while left-arm medium pacer Mrittunjoy Chowdhury claimed 2-16. In reply, Young Tigers chased down the target in a hurry within 11.2 overs with 5 wickets in hand. Mahmudul Hasan was remained not out on 32 off 20 balls. Coming on to chase a paltry target, Bangladesh U19s lost four wickets while posting their first 30 runs as they faced much difficulties in handling Hong Kong’s Nasrulla Rana who took a four-wicket haul in the match. Akbar Ali and Mahmudul Hasan Joy, however, brought the junior Tigers back in the match by stitching a crucial 58-run stand.
Ali was dismissed by Hassan Khan for 25 runs, but Joy remained unbeaten on 32 runs while Shoriful Islam came in and added the last four runs by hitting a boundary off the very first ball that he faced.
This was Bangladesh second win in the tournament after their opening match defeat against Sri Lanka. The Tigers are currently on second position with 4 points as Sri Lanka is top of group B. Defending champions Afghanistan and India have already qualified for the semi-finals from the other group. Bangladesh U19s will take on the India U19s on Thursday (October 4) in the first semi-final match. The second semi-final will see the Sri Lanka U19s facing the defending Under-19 Asia Cup champions, the Afghanistan U19s, on the next day.
