The government under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has undertaken a well-thought-out plan to ensure proper water management.

Water management is crucial for the ongoing development of the country, AKM Enamul Haque Shameem, deputy minister for Water Resources and also organising secretary of Central Committee of Bangladesh Awami League, told Bangladesh Post.

“Rivers across the country are not curse but boon for us. Our first and foremost responsibility is to find ways to ensure the proper management of water resources”,

“Presently, the people are predominantly plagued by river erosion, waterlogging, water pollution, and crisis at haor areas. So it has become imperative to ease them out of the longstanding crises,” he narrated.

“We have made a list of most erosion-prone districts and visited several regions including Hatia, Rajbari, Tangail, and especially Naria where at least 5,500 households were devoured by river last year. We have also visited DND dam along with our state minister and officials concerned of our ministry so that effective measures can be taken”, he informed.

“We are taking all-out measures to check river erosion before the rainy season sets in.”

“The Water Resources Ministry is not a development ministry like many other ministries. We can rather call it a ministry of humanity because it stands by the people for saving them from river erosion, water pollution, waterlogging, flood, haor crisis. Keeping all these problems in consideration, we are trying our best with determination and honesty.”

While asked about his measures to end river encroachment, he sounded a stern action against illegal grabbers of riverside lands.

“We have to save our rivers for the sake of our nation and whoever are the encroachers they wouldn’t be able to keep rivers in their possession anymore. We have already identified areas where such acts have been done. Sometimes we come to know through newspaper reports and take measures. We are running study by our own initiative. We will find out the problems first and then take remedial measures.”

Mentioning dredging as very important to keep rivers navigable, he said they need support from the shipping ministry in this regard and they will work with full coordination to keep the rivers active.  Not only one, sometimes they need cooperation and coordination with some other ministries and government agencies concerned to carry out measures easily and comfortably, he said.

When asked about rehabilitation programme for erosion-hit people, the deputy minister said the government has already taken up a programme under which the affected people are getting support.

In the last rainy season, in Naria at least 5,500 went into the gorge of Padma river. The government took initiative to rehabilitate them. Steps was undertaken to recover ‘Ulfotganj’ Bazar by refilling works, he also said.

Till December last the homeless people were getting support under VGF programme. This programme has been extended up to March and they were also given tin for building house. Damaged schools were given support to rebuild.  So, all-out supports were given to them, he continued.

People of all strata, including intellectuals, professionals, journalists, teachers, have unfathomable trust upon Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

They not only think, but they also believe from bottom of their heart that ‘Sheikh Hasinar Haate Desh Ar Pechhabe Na Bangladesh’ (Bangladesh will not lag behind any more as it is in the hands of Sheikh Hasina).

The Delta Plan, Padma Bridge, Hatirjheel, Metro Rail, Karnaphuli Tunnel, Payra Port, Book Festival on the first day of the year, health sector development, digital Bangladesh, electricity at every homestead and all other pro-people measures taken by the incumbent government will help the country move forward, he proudly said.

The water resources ministry will play its role to this end with sincerity, he said with confidence.
