Both USA and UK have expressed satisfaction over the overall management process of the 11th national election held December 30 and its results. They have said that without few stray incidents of irregularity on the Election Day, the overall situation across the country was very satisfactory.
The newly appointed Foreign Minister Dr AKA Momen said this to Bangladesh Post on Monday night.
He also said they expressed satisfaction on the Election Day also.
In reply to a query over the phone, he said that in the meantime, US Ambassador Earl Miller has visited his house and assured him of all kinds of cooperation.
The minister said, “The US, the country’s largest foreign investor, remains deeply interested in the future and democratic development of Bangladesh.”
“Earlier on December 30, the US ambassador visited different poll centres in Sylhet. During his visit also, he expressed satisfaction over the polls,” Momen added.
In reply to a query over why US president and UK’s PM have not greeted Sheikh Hasina over the landslide victory, the foreign minister said, “It is actually not in their tradition to greet the poll results of other countries.”
Earlier, several western powers including the UK, US and EU expressed concern over the ‘irregularities that took place’ in the 11th parliamentary election.
In separate statements, they called upon the Election Commission to address the issue. They, however, praised the political parties for taking part in the election.
