Manchester United will reportedly back Jose Mourinho to the tune of €110m this January if the right deals can be found. The United board are apparently willing to spend over €100m on new names in January.
The Portuguese tactician is believed to want a central defender and a goalscoring forward as the Red Devils look to make up for lost time in the Premier League and go deep in the Champions League.
The Guardian have revealed that the board at Old Trafford will release funds to improve the squad during the winter window – but only if the incoming names do exactly that.
Harry Maguire and Jerome Boateng were both defenders that Mourinho wanted to sign over the summer, but those were rebuffed by Ed Woodward as it was deemed they were not improvements on players already at United. But despite disquiet during the off-season about the amount deals being done and the amount of money being spent, they claim that there will be money to spend once January rolls around.
Raphael Varane is thought to be right at the top of United’s wish list and they would be happy to spend north of €100m should Real Madrid be willing to sell.
Last January Alexis Sánchez joined from Arsenal in a swap deal with Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Rumours surrounding Mourinho’s future at Old Trafford seemed to have quietened down in recent weeks, after there were strong suggestions that Zinedine Zidane would take over last month.
Still though, Mourinho has called into question the board’s ability to improve the team, with comments only last week that Juventus had beaten United in Europe because they “showed more ambition” in the transfer market.
